Patience Bow

On the 7th day of Direstar in the sixth year of Gostul the Just

Whispers on the wind told me Gadeon was in the dungeons of Quormire the home to the vast hoard of Styrix. I was unable to once again to find Gadeon, but did stumble across a curious bow in Styrix's hoard. In all appearence it looks like a masterwork bow, and works adequately as such. If one holds the arrow back for a time, the bow turns from a pale white to pitch black. Release the bow in this state and the arrow slowly leaves the bow. Its trajectory never altering. With enough patience I have seen the arrows "fly" through trees, stone walls, the earth itself. This will be useful in killing Gadeon slowly, so I bargained with Styrix for the bow.

Patience Bow

Description

At a Glance

The Patience Bow, at a glance, looks like a well made masterwork longbow. It is a pale off white color. The string is a gray/silver material.

Names and aliases

  • Patience Bow
  • Slow Bow
  • Infinity Bow
  • Bow of Time
  • Torturers Bow
  • Siege Bow
  • Haste Bane

Detailed Description

On detailed inspection the "wood" of the bow is discovered to be bone, and it is intricately carved with subtle, small, shallow runes. The bowstring is hair of some creature silver in color. The bow has a just barely perceptible harder pull than a normal masterwork bow.

Mechanics

When firing impatiently it fires as a normal masterwork bow. If you hold the arrow back for 2d3 rounds the bow will turn black, and the arrow when released will move at 1 inch per round. Once released like this the arrow is unstoppable. It will penetrate and fly through whatever is in front of it. Trying to hit or deflect the arrow will most likely break whatever you are hitting it with. The arrow flies perfectly straight, and if you follow it long enough you will notice it begin to rise off the ground. Using the bow while hasted shatters it. Not something easily discerned.

Usage

Adventures have found creative ways to use the bow:
  • Tie up an enemy and fire the bow at them from ten paces. Especially delightful for those you loathe.
  • Tie a chain to the arrow, and the other end to a large boulder. Fire it at a wall or fortification. Make sure the chain is strong.
  • Tie your enemy to the arrow via a length of rope and fire it into the air.
  • Head on the arrow is hard to see, and you can fire it into a charging enemy.
  • With enough time and arrows you could bore through anything.

Creation

Several speculations on the origin and creation of the bow exist. Some think it is a weapon of the gods. Others think it an artefact of the ancient magics before they were tamed. Prutence wrote in "The History of Artefacts New and Old" that it is created from the thigh bone of a dragon who died of old age. The bowstring is composed of 100 hairs from 100 drow, each drow required to be 500 years or older. The runes have to be carved into the bow one at time, perfectly, and only one rune can be carved per fortnight or the ritual fails.

One Door Dungeon

On the 11th day of Nonegray in the sixth year of Gostul the Just

I was searching in the forgotten forests of Spar ever in search of Gadeon when I discovered a door covered in an array of complex interlocking gears. The door was sitting in a clearing, and appeared to lead to nowhere. Looking behind it all I saw was a dull gray metal. A giant metal wheel on the front made for driving the gears, changed a set of brass numbers in a magical plate. Each turn of the wheel changed the numbers up or down, and each opening of the door revealed a new room behind the door. Always a single room, always different. I spent many a month looking for Gadeon behind that door, but to no avail. The search continues.
